The Sage Gateshead has launched a new digital project to bring classical music to wider audiences in the North East of England. Concerts by The Sage’s resident Northern Sinfonia, along with Manchester Camerata and London’s Aurora Orchestra, will be streamed digitally, either live or soon after the event, to North East arts venues including Alnwick Playhouse, Northumberland, The Maltings Theatre & Cinema, Berwick-upon-Tweed, and Gala Theatre, Durham, with a ticket price of £5. They will also be available to view live online and for a limited period after the event.

First in the series is the Aurora Orchestra from London’s Camden Roundhouse in Richard Strauss and Bernstein on February 25. This is followed by Manchester Camerata from the Royal Northern College of Music on April 28 and the Northern Sinfonia in Prokofiev and Bizet on May 6.

The scheme is made possible by a grant from the Digital Research and Development Fund for Arts and Culture run by Arts Council England, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts.

‘We’re tremendously excited to have won the funding to use the latest technology to bring the music of Northern Sinfonia to new audiences across the North of England,’ said The Sage Gateshead general director Anthony Sargent. ‘Innovation and pioneering are at the heart of The Sage Gateshead’s DNA, from our landmark building to our groundbreaking Learning and Participation Scheme, and this latest digital project marks another exciting new chapter in the work of Northern Sinfonia.’
